    The Diminishing Present, 2007

The Diminishing Present was shot almost exclusively around my hometown of Lisbon (Portugal) and adopted hometown of Bedford (UK). Inspired by Salman Rushdie’s reflections on the film The Wizard of OZ, The Diminishing Present explores the concept of ‘home’.

The premise for this work stemmed from Rushdie’s closing observations in the book The Wizard of Oz (BFI Film Classics): ‘Its not that there is no place like home, there is no longer any such thing as “home”’.

Produced almost entirely within a 10km radius of my home and studio, The Diminishing Present is a journey of recognition: the city and, in a broader sense, home, as our object of understanding is changing and because of this one needs to find a new critical language that supports it, and a new system of knowledge from which to derive our glossary of life.

Whilst this project encompasses a variety of changing landscapes, the images in this gallery focus solely on the devastating forest fires that afflicted Portugal  between 2006 and 2007.
